The surprising truth behind your dog’s awful breath--and what you can do about it.

Alternatives for Animals, Holistic Veterinary Care for your Pet

Imagine how your teeth would look and feel if you didn’t brush them daily. The same applies to your pets’ teeth. Bad breath and stained teeth are unappealing, but many pet owners aren’t aware that these may be symptoms of serious gum disease. Unless you are regularly providing some form of dental care, you are neglecting an important factor in the overall health of your pet.

Check your dog or cat's teeth regularly.
Since pets are much better at hiding pain than humans, if your pet is suffering from oral disease, you probably won’t know. That’s why it’s important to check your pet’s teeth regularly. Here’s what to look for:

  • White, red, or swollen gums (they should be pink)
  • Brown tartar on teeth
  • Tumors on gums
  • Cysts under gums
  • Loose teeth

If you see any of these symptoms, you should schedule an appointment with your vet. If not, practicing preventative dental care will help avoid painful dental problems (and expensive veterinary bills) in the future.

Truly bad breath? It’s not healthy.
We love our pets, bad breath and all. But if your pet’s mouth truly reeks, that’s a problem. In fact, halitosis is a common symptom of periodontal disease, which causes gum and even bone loss. If your dog’s kisses leave you gasping for air, do yourself and your dog a favor and check with a vet. For relief from normal dog breath, try Smart n Tasty Fresh Breath Dental Treats or Tropiclean Fresh Breath Products. You’ll be glad you did.

Diet matters.
Like cookies and crackers, most kibble is loaded with starch that sticks to teeth and may actually encourage poor dental health.  High meat canned food and raw foods contain negligible amounts of starch so try adding more of these to your pet’s diet to promote dental health. If you’re interested in learning more about raw pet food, just ask any of our highly knowledgeable sales associates.

Treats and toys can improve dental health.
We’re always looking for an excuse to spoil our pets, and here’s a great one: treats, chews and toys can be great for your pet’s dental health. Dental chews like Smart n' Tasty Dental Care Chews don't just freshen your pet's breath...they also prevent tartar buildup. Your dog will love Primal or Tucker Raw Bones and they'll help to keep their jaws strong and their teeth clean.

Dogs & cats should brush their teeth, too!
Regular brushing is the most effective way to prevent dental disease. If you’re not yet in the habit of brushing your pet’s teeth, it’s time to start. If your pet’s uncomfortable with a tooth brush, Kissable dental wipes, provide a convenient alternative. And if brushing is simply not an option, try water or food additives like Wysong DentaTreat or Tropiclean Water Additive.

Does your dog or cat need his teeth cleaned professionally? Think Anesthesia-Free.
We know how this sounds, but your dog needs a dentist. Without regular cleanings, plaque and calculus will spread under the gum line causing gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and periodontitis (loss of bone and soft tissue around the teeth), resulting in severe pain for your dog.
