You must be passionate about helping pets and about serving customers and co-workers and consistently provide superb customer service. You must want and be capable of inspiring co-workers to do the same. No specific experience or education is required. However, we are only interested in hiring truly caring and compassionate people who sincerely share our values. We also look for the capability and willingness to think quantitatively, manage for specific sales outcomes, and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing. Good self-awareness and self-control, a strong achievement drive, empathy, and good social skills are essential for success in our company. Retail experience and/or pet expertise is advantageous.
There is a one-week training course held at the Corporate HQ that must be completed by the third month of employment. Assistant Managers also attend a monthly leadership-training seminar at HQ. In addition, we regularly hold advanced pet and pet product-training courses that you are required to attend, as well as occasional in-store training sessions.
Assistant Managers receive $13.00 - $15.00 per hour. In addition, there are monthly team sales incentives which may pay up to another $1.44 per hour plus an administrative performance bonus of up to$50 per month.

We provide medical and dental insurance, with a modest co-payment, after six months of service. Two weeks of vacation, one week of sick leave, and four holidays per year are accrued on a pro-rata basis per hour worked (based on a 40-hour workweek). We also have a Profit Sharing and 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan that you are eligible for after one year of full-time service. Assistant Managers are hired on a forty hours per week basis. Overtime is required as needed. The position is non-exempt. You must be willing and able to work evenings and weekends on a regular basis. We are open every day except New Year’s, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Every other day is considered a regular workday. No time off permitted during the two weeks preceding Christmas. Travel between stores and the corporate office is regularly necessary and you must have the means to do it.
You must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis in order to stock the store and to do carryouts for customers. You also must be able to be certified on an electric pallet jack. Duties include:
- Creating an atmosphere of service and trust.
- Assuring that customer service and satisfaction exceeds our clients' expectations.
- Assisting in directing sales in accordance with Company philosophy and procedures.
- Overseeing daily store operations in accordance with Company standards.
- Opening and closing the store, daily reconciliation, cash handling, & bank deposits.
- Directing and supervising staff.
- Communicating with staff and home office, providing reports. Dealing with personnel issues within the store.
- On-the-job training of staff in service sales, product knowledge, and operations.
- Maintaining store appearance.
- Procuring product and maintaining an accurate inventory.
- Product merchandising.
