Pet Food Express: Four-Legged Fogheads

Four-Legged Fogheads

Pet Food Express and KFOG will be featuring a new Four-legged Foghead every other Friday on the air!

Our latest Four-legged Foghead is Cheeto, the 5-year-old Lab!

cheeto images

Cheeto’s owners are moving out-of-state and cannot keep him, so Golden Gate Labrador Rescue is helping him find a new home. Cheeto is blind, so he has been a little harder to place. He gets along with kids, but we don’t know about cats. He is a little more than 100 pounds and could use to lose a little weight—but just passed his vet’s wellness exam!

With the right family, some training and exercise, Lab Rescue is confident Cheeto can thrive. Do you have some room in your heart for a big ol’, sweet, lover boy Lab?

If interested, you can contact Lab Rescue’s Ronnie at 408-738-0841.

Find love in your “Heart” with this gorgeous, 1-year-old spayed rabbit.KFOG logo

Heart Foghead image

Heart is a delightful mix of beauty and brains! Did you know rabbits can learn their names, play with toys, use a litter box like a cat and will bond to their human guardians for life?

Heart is looking for her loving forever home with people who will allow her to be a pampered indoor house rabbit. No outside hutches for this lady! After some fun time running and playing in your home, she'd love to sit next to you on the sofa and watch some TV.

Heart, like most rabbits, is more fragile than a cat or dog. Rabbits are typically not a good choice for families with children under 5 years old. With proper care, house rabbits can live to be more than 10 years old. The most compassionate and cost-effective way to adopt a spayed or neutered rabbit is to adopt from a rescue group or local animal shelter. Find Love in Your Heart!

If you are ready to bring some love and joy into your home, Heart is your girl! Contact Marcy at SaveABunny rabbit rescue at 415-388-2790 or visit SaveABunny's Web site at www.saveabunny.org to learn more about adopting a rescued rabbit, volunteering or making a tax-deductible donation.

Meet Shami, a 5-year old long-haired brown & white cat.

Shami image

She is already spayed and very affectionate. Shami was found wandering the streets and reported to be injured. After treatment for flea allergy and a close watch on her diet, she is doing well. She likes being picked up, offers a loud purr to show her affection, and would enjoy being the queen of a household. Her beautiful fur will require regular brushing to keep it luxurious and mat-free. She agrees—and allows long brush sessions.

Shami is available at our Cat Adoption Center at the Walnut Creek store. You can visit Shami or other adoptable cats there 7 days a week! Contra Costa Animal Services are the “Animal Cops,” rescuing animals from unwanted and abused situations, helping to find homes for thousands of animals that come through their two shelters every year. See all of their animals available for adoption at http://www.ccasd.org. Also, find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ccasd.

Meet Coconut, a 6-year-old, 6-pound female Chihuahua mix.

coconut image
KFOG logo

Coconut arrived at Peninsula Humane Society as a somewhat fearful stray in November. They’ve made her healthy and taught her how to love and trust humans again!

Today, she’s a friendly, outgoing, playful girl and good leash-walker who loves toys. She has a lot of energy, but is also gentle. She would be a good match for someone who has never had a dog. She can get along with other dogs and children of any age—but not sure about cats. She would likely benefit greatly from obedience training, so they are making that a mandatory part of her adoption.

And, best of all, she qualifies for Peninsula Humane’s current “Sweet Deal.” They are waiving the adoption fee for all chocolate, toffee, caramel and golden Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes.

To find out more information or to adopt Coconut please visit: PeninsulaHumaneSociety.org.

Meet Merlin at Pet Food Express - Market Street

Meet Merlin, a 4-year-old Longed-Haired neutered male cat who is friendly, social and has a gorgeous gray and white coat. Merlin is a special medical adoption due to having a cataract in his left eye. His eye does not bother him but he should be kept indoors and have regular check-ups as he gets older. Merlin has a lovely personality: he’s curious, loves attention and loves to be petted. Merlin was a stray kitty picked up in the Outer Sunset about a month ago. He is currently available for adoption at SF Animal Care & Control’s Cat Adoption Center located in our  San Francisco - Market Street store (1975 Market St.).

These locations are unlike our low-cost mobile vaccination clinics held on the weekends. Each one is located inside a Pet Food Express store in a more traditional veterinary setting, and are open to the public during the week.We have expanded our services at these locations significantly. Check below to see some of the new services available to you. While we cannot provide surgeries at these facilities, we are able to provide far more diagnostics and treatments than we can during the weekend clinics. We recommend these centers for more complete veterinary care, where you can bring your pets for yearly physical exams and diagnostic of basic illnesses and injuries. All of the services you can find at our weekend clinics are available here as well, although pricing for basic services is higher at the Wellness Centers than at our low-cost vaccination clinics. Pet Food Express: Save a Kitten

Save a Kitten

JOIN US DURING THE MONTH OF APRIL for our annual Save a Kitten fundraiser at all our stores!

Our Save a Kitten program provides food, supplies, toys and financial aid to dozens of organizations in Northern California. Just last year, with your help, we raised $60,000 for shelters and cat rescue organizations to help them during "kitten season."

Save a Kitten Annual Fundraiser

Here's a little history on how this all got started at Pet Food Express.  While cats can have between 2-4 litters per year,  the spring months are the most common when breeding takes place. This has become known as "kitten season" for the huge number of kittens born in the spring to both domestic and feral cats. These numbers are in the tens of thousands just in Northern California every spring.

So, the local shelters and cat rescue groups easily get overwhelmed with the number of kittens being turned in. Save a Kitten is designed to help both provide food, formula and other needed supplies for these kittens. And the monetary donations help pay for spay and neuter programs and other needs.

The other huge need is for foster homes for the kittens that need to be bottle fed every 2 hours as well as kittens of all ages (that just need extra love and attention until they are old enough to be spayed/neutered and put up for adoption). Spay and neuter programs are critical as a cat can become pregnant as young as 4 months of age. An un-spayed female cat and her offspring can produce over 400,000 kittens in her lifetime.

Save a KittenHow can you help? Well, the most fun way to help is to become a foster family to some kittens for a few weeks (you can even request kittens that are old enough that they don't need to be bottle fed). Just about every shelter and cat rescue group needs fosters all year but especially in the spring. Also, during the month of April, Pet Food Express will be accepting donations of kitten food, formula, litter and other supplies at all of our stores. For a little extra incentive, we'll give you 20% off anything you donate to the Save a Kitten fundraiser. We'll also be accepting monetary donations. Click here for a link to an article about Save a Kitten.

Pet Food Express: Lead Screening Procedures

Lead Screening Procedures

In an effort to assure the safety of the products that we sell for your pets, Pet Food Express has invested in a testing tool that allows us to quickly and accurately scan products for a measurement of total lead concentrations*.

At present, there is no specific regulation of lead in pet products so we have elected to apply the standards devised for children’s toys.  The limit for total lead is 600 ppm (parts per million) or 150 ppm soluble or leachable lead.  Soluble or leachable lead refers to the amount of lead that could be absorbed by the body if the item were ingested.

We have tested samples of our entire inventory for lead.  Additionally, we now test a sample of every new item before we put it on our shelves.  We will also randomly test existing items that previously passed to assure ongoing safety.  If we obtain a measurement of total lead of 600 ppm or higher OR a soluble lead measurement of 150 ppm or more (through independent laboratory analysis), we recall the item from our stores and our clients and post signage to that effect in our stores and on our website.   Simultaneously, we contact the manufacturer to apprise them of the situation and to give them an opportunity to address and/or correct it.

We offer a refund (with receipt) or an exchange (without a receipt) to any of our customers who previously purchased the product.

*The instrument we use is a Niton XLt797Y X-ray fluorescence analyzer (www.niton.com/NITON-Analyzers-Products/xlt.aspx) from Thermo Scientific.  It is a widely used instrument for field and laboratory measurements by both regulatory agencies and businesses.

Pet Food Express: Suspect Ingredients

Suspect Ingredients

What are they and what do they do?

Unspecified Animal By-Product and By-Product Meal
Animal by-products and animal by-product meals may include mammal and poultry intestines, organs, heads, feet and bones. The proportion of intestines and organs (good and highly nutritious) versus heads, feet and bones (less nutritious and potentially too high in minerals), as well as the specific animals used, may vary considerably, even from batch to batch. Although this ingredi-ent is not necessarily bad, the inconsistencies allowable under the regulations can result in quality variations that may cause digestive problems, including vomiting, diarrhea, gas and refusal to eat.

Animal Fat
Animal fat may include mammal and poultry fat and comes primarily from slaughterhouse waste and grocery store fat trimmings classified as inedible for human consumption. Other sources, such as recycled restaurant grease, are also allowable. Again, although this ingredient is not necessarily bad, the variability of sources permitted under the regulations can result in quality variations that may cause digestive problems, including vomiting, diarrhea, gas and refusal to eat.

Meat and Bone Meal
Meat and bone meal is made from slaughterhouse leftovers and bone. The resulting ingredient is low in protein (less than 50%) and high in ash (more than 35%). High ash levels are often implicated in kidney disease, a leading cause of death of dogs and cats in the U.S.

BHA, BHT, Propylene Glycol
BHA has been shown in laboratory studies to cause cancerous tumors. BHT may become toxic or may cause other chemicals to become toxic when found in certain combinations. Propylene glycol is illegal to use in cat foods as it is proven to cause a severe bleeding disorder.

Artificial Colorings and Flavors
Dogs and cats don’t use colors to feed, so why include them? Different colorings have been shown to cause everything from cancer to a wide variety of allergic reactions. Artificial flavors are typically used to make unpalatable things palatable. If it doesn’t taste good enough to eat on its own, then find something better!

Pet Food Express: Answers to commonly asked questions

Answers to commonly asked questions

Have the banned ingredients harmed or killed dogs or cats?
While some of the information we used to help us make this decision is anecdotal (stories of personal experience of pet owners) many scientific studies exist to support our decision. We are happy to furnish you with website references and published scientific study results upon request.

I feed Science Diet/Iams/Eukanuba. What do you sell that I can feed instead?
We understand that these national brands have been around for many years and pet owners who feed them are often very comfortable with how they have performed in the past. We too, feel these brands have been staples in the marketplace. However, national manufacturers now all offer top-of-the-line products which, by their own admission, are their most nutritional superior brands. These are now the only products we carry within these lines. We would be happy to show you any of these foods.

I feed (a food manufactured by a company that we do not sell). What do you sell that I can feed instead?
We sell a wide variety of premier foods, one of which should meet the needs of your pet. In order to decide which food or foods that is, I’ll need to ask you several questions.

My dog/cat will only eat the food I am currently feeding. How can I get him to eat other foods?
Palatability, how food tastes and feels in the pet’s mouth, can be one of the most challenging aspects of ensuring your pet is fed a nutritionally superior diet. It’s easiest to compare our pets to children when it comes to food. What 5 year old would pass up a hot fudge sundae for a bowl of vegetables? But, what parent would allow their 5 year old to eat a hot fudge sundae instead of their daily vegetables? We can all agree the hot fudge sundae isn’t more nutritious, but it sure is tastier. And when it comes to tasty, your dog or cat is more like a 5 year old and less like a responsible parent. So if they won’t be responsible, you have to be. What lower quality pet foods lack in nutrition they make up for in taste. So switching can be tough. Try adding a small amount of warm water, popping food in the microwave for several seconds or topping with canned or raw food. Go slow when transitioning to a new food. It may take or week or several months. This enormous improvement to your pet’s health will be worth the time and effort.

The last time I switched foods my dog/cat got diarrhea/gas/upset stomach. Is that inevitable?
The key to switching foods for an animal with a sensitive digestive tract is to do it slowly. The average dog/cat can switch in 5-7 days. Owners should slowly increase the amount of new food being fed and decrease the amount of the old food. ALWAYS judge your ability to advance this ratio based on your pet’s digestive tract and tell-tale signs such as loose stools, flatulence (stinky gas!) or vomiting. Some animals will switch to new foods with little or no digestive upset. Others may take a month or longer. Whatever your timeline, just remember, you are doing this to improve the health of your pet.

My dog/cat has food allergies. What should I do?
Food allergies account for less than 10% of allergy symptoms (inhalant allergies and environmental allergies comprise the other 90%). However, if your pet does have a food allergy, it is most likely to a protein source such as beef, milk or gluten (the protein portion found in grains). There are many alternative protein foods such as Pinnacle’s Duck & Potato or Trout & Sweet Potato, or try a grain free diet like Taste of the Wild. Additionally, dry and itchy skin can be relieved using skin healthy supplements like salmon oil or topical treatments such as Earthbath’s Oatmeal & Aloe Shampoo.

My veterinarian recommended the food I’m currently feeding. I’m not sure I should switch?
We sell a wide variety of natural, holistic and organic foods, one of which should meet the needs of your pet. In order to decide which food or foods that is, I’ll need to ask you several questions. If you have concerns about changing foods, just bring the bag to your veterinarian and have this discussion with them. Working with the veterinary community is the best way to make sure we end-up with the perfect food for your pet.

My breeder/neighbor/friend/relative/vet recommended the food I’m currently feeding. I’m not sure I should switch?
We sell a wide variety of natural, holistic and organic foods, one of which should meet the needs of your pet. In order to decide which food or foods that is, I’ll need to ask you several questions. If you still have concerns about changing foods, take the bag home and show it to the person who first recommended your current food. I’m guessing they’re going to want to try it, too! But, if for some reason it doesn’t seem like it’s going to work, just bring it back! At PFE you are welcome to return any product, in any condition (yes, even if you opened it and fed it to your pet), for a complete refund or exchange.

What is a natural, holistic or organic pet food?
A natural pet food is one that contains ingredients that are not subjected to chemical processing and contain no additives. Holistic pet foods take this one step further, including fruits and vegetables which offer your pet natural sources of vitamins and other nutrients. Holistic foods can also include glucosamine and chondroitin, a natural aid in joint disease, balanced levels of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for ideal immune and skin health, and pre and probiotics to support digestion. Organic foods are required, by rules set forth by the USDA, to contain ingredients that are grown in chemical free soils (fertilizers and pesticides) and are not genetically modified in any way. We strongly believe in the health benefits of these types of foods and carry an extensive selection of all of them.

Pet Food Express: Pet Food Ingredient Standards

Pet Food Ingredient Standards

Choosing our pet's food is one of the most important decisions most of us make for their health and well-being. The numerous recalls in recent years illustrate the tenuous state of food safety in our country.

The lack of regulatory resources coupled with the rapidly growing number of choices, makes it difficult for a pet owner to determine which brands are better or safer. This is why we are taking the unprecedented step in improving pet safety by introducing our new pet food ingredients standards.

We have found that it is the makeup and quality of the ingredients that accounts for the overall quality of your pet’s food. Some ingredients often found in pet foods are inferior or unnecessary and others, although not inherently unsafe or nutritionally inferior, come from questionable sources and too often vary in composition or quality.

In order to offer greater assurances of safety and consistency in the food we sell, Pet Food Express is doing something no other pet supply company has ever done- we are excluding from our shelves what we feel are suspect ingredients found in dog and cat food and treats. They are:

  • Unspecified animal by-products or animal by-product meals
  • “Animal fat “
  • “Meat and bone meal “
  • BHA, BHT, and propylene glycol
  • Artificial colors or flavors

For 20 years, Pet Food Express has been dedicated to providing a wholesome and safe selection of pet foods and treats. We promise to continue to research the latest developments in pet food so that we can be certain that we are doing the best for our pets….and yours.

Pet Food Express: Lead Alert

Lead Alert

As part of Pet Food Express’ Safety Assurance Program, we are now testing all of our pet toys for lead before they reach our shelves. Since no lead standards exist for pet products, we have elected to apply the current child safety standards set by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission.

In our testing, we discovered several products that contained unacceptably high levels of lead. Although we have neither received nor heard any reports of injury associated with any of the products we’ve sold and these recalls are not being ordered by the government or product manufacturers, our own discomfort with allowing even a small risk caused us to notify the manufacturers and recall the products.

We want you and your pets to be happy with all of your purchases at Pet Food Express, so we stand behind our products with a 100% satisfaction guarantee! We encourage you to return any recalled pet products purchased from Pet Food Express for a full refund (with receipt) or exchange (without a receipt).

About our Product Safety Assurance Program

about lead in pet toys, click here
about pet food ingredient standards, click here

In our growing global economy, it is becoming more and more difficult to be assured of safe manufacturing practices. Unfortunately, over the decades we have been in business, we have seen and responded to a growing number of serious pet product safety crises. We have reacted by increasing our vigilance about the products we choose to sell.

We wish that pet product regulation was more reliable. But until things change, we feel it’s our responsibility as business owners and animal advocates to do the best we can to ensure that the products we sell are as safe as possible.

Our Product Safety Assurance Program was designed to help to strengthen our already strict position in the pet retail industry. We know we won’t accept anything less than the safest quality goods from our suppliers for our pets…and yours and we want you to know it.

Our company is being especially proactive about issues in a way that is literally unheard of in the pet retail industry: We are studying ingredients and voluntarily banning the ones that we feel are questionable in quality and safety; we’re testing for lead in all of our products before they hit the shelves, in spite of manufacturer standards and we’re continuing to be the pet retail company leaders in providing the most diligent recall information available.

Why are we doing this?
Because we feel it’s the right thing to do. We simply wouldn’t sell it to you if we wouldn’t give it to our own pets.

For further information about the Product Safety Assurance Program, including test results and other findings, resources and product information, please see links above and feel free to contact us should you have any questions or comments.

Pet Food Express: Giving Tree Fundraiser

Giving Tree Fundraiser

JOIN US DURING THE MONTH OF DECEMBER for our annual Giving Tree fundraiser at all our stores!

Every pet deserves a toy for the holidays.Snoopy from Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA with his Kong

Our Giving Tree fundraiser provides toys and financial aid to dozens of Northern California shelters during the holidays. Just last year, with your help, we raised $77,000 for lonely dogs and cats in shelters.

Here's a little history on how this all got started at Pet Food Express. Many shelter animals feel isolated and stressed, and toys can calm them and provide a fun activity. Although the animals can feel stressed anytime of year, we felt the holidays were a great time to ask our customers to help provide toys for homeless pets.

How can you participate? It's super easy! All you have to do is buy a "Kong" toy during the month of December at Pet Food Express and donate it to the Giving Tree program. We'll give you 20% off the cost of the Kong, and we'll give you an ornament to hang on the Giving Tree (where you can write in the name of your own pet or someone special).

It's very stressful being in a shelter, waiting to be adopted, and we want to give a little joy to hundreds of Northern California pets this year.

Pet Food Express: Save a K-9 Fundraiser

Save a K-9 Fundraiser

JOIN US ON JUNE 30 & JULY 1ST for our annual Save a K9 fundraiser at all our stores!

Save a K-9 Fundraiser

Our Save a K9 program provides protective K-9 vests, trauma kits, car heat alarms and grants for retired police dog medical care to K9s in Northern California. So far, with your help, we have raised more than $200,000 for the non-profit called Cover Your K9 (in just 3 years). With that money we have helped more than 100 K9s throughout Northern California.

How can you participate? We've tried to make it as easy as possible! All you have to do is come to our stores on June 30th and July 1st and wash your dog (actually, here's a secret, you can buy dog wash tokens for the fundraiser starting June 23rd). All the money ($15/token) from the dog washes during that weekend will go directly to help K9s in Northern California (100%). So you get a clean dog and get to help K9s at the same time! (In fact, you can buy all the tokens you need for the whole year that weekend, and all the money will go to K9s.)

Save a K-9 Fundraiser

Here's a little history on how this all got started at Pet Food Express. Several years ago it came to our attention that more than half of all the K-9 dogs working with police departments did not have protective vests like their human partners did. Lack of funding was the primary reason, so we set out to raise money to buy these vests by donating proceeds from our pet washes and enlisting the public's help with other donations too. A brand new state of the art vest was designed as a result of the "Cover Your K-9" fundraiser through the Police and Working K-9 Foundation. This vest is not only more protective, but lighter and easier for the dogs to wear. We are committed to protecting those that protect all of us. If you'd like more information about the non-profit, please visit www.coveryourk9.com or go to our "News & Events" tab and look under "In the Press" for coverage of our past fundraisers (click here for a link to one article & click here for a list of all the K9s that have received vests so far).

Pet Food Express: Make Your Pet a Star

Make Your Pet a Star

Our tails our wagging in excitement of the Million Dollar Mutt campaign—which will be $1 million raised for Northern California pet rescue!

Your puppy oughta be in pictures.

Have you ever noticed all the large pet photos in our stores?  We can help make your pet a star, too, at Pet Food Express!

It’s called the “My Mutt” program, and it helps pet rescues and pet shelters throughout the Bay Area.

And don’t be fooled by its name, the My Mutt program happily will display purebreds, cats, hamsters, horses, birds—you name it!

It’s actually a simple process and makes a great gift for a family member or friend.

All you have to do is make a donation of at least $250 to a non-profit rescue or shelter of your choice (donations must be within the same calendar year as the My Mutt application)  . This would be in addition to adoption fees. Your donation should be sent directly to the organization that you are supporting, not Pet Food Express. We just need proof of your donation via a receipt .

We hire a professional pet photographer to arrange a photo shoot of your adorable critter.

And once you choose an image, we will blow up the photo to poster size and will put it on display in the store of your choosing. You get to see your “celebrity” pet every time you shop for food and supplies. Next time you are in one of our stores, you can check out all the wonderful pictures of people’s pets on the walls and in the windows.

“Number one, people love seeing their pets larger than life on the walls and in the windows of the stores. Not to mention, people love sending their friends and family to the stores to see their baby’s photo!”, Shani Russell, Web master for Pet Food Express, said. “Number two, it also brings donation money directly to the shelters that are always in need of funding.”

Partnering with Northern California Pet Adoption, these photos are our way of celebrating these wonderful animals and also a means of helping the rescue organizations and shelters who do the tireless front line work of finding homes for animals in need.

Those who donate $250 or more will see their poster displayed in the store for six months, and for a donation of $500 or more, the image will be up for a year.

We have also matched My Mutt donations to help rescue groups like Bad Rap (Bay Area Dog Lovers Responsible About Pit Bulls) with medical treatments for dogs. Recently, we presented a check to Bad Rap for $5,400, to provide knee surgery for Pinky, a 2-year-old, mild-mannered bull terrier.

“A lot of pits have knee problems and often we have to make the difficult decision (of not rescuing them from shelters), but we knew somehow, something would happen,” Bad Rap co-founder Donna Reynolds said. “And (Pet Food Express) came around. The pit gods have spoken.” “It’s from the heart,” Bad Rap co-founder Tim Racer added.

We have set a lofty goal for ourselves—hitting the $1 million mark in 2011 for total My Mutt donations. Contact mymutt@petfoodexpress.com for more information, and help us EXPRESS your love for pets.

Pet Food Express: My Mutt Photographers

My Mutt Photographers

Meet the photographers behind the My Mutt posters.

Mark Rogers (San Francisco, Peninsula, North Bay)

Mark Rogers Photography

I've been photographing animals since I could hold a camera. In fact, the very first picture I ever printed was a shot I took when I was 11 of my black cat sitting in a patch of hot pink azalea bushes. What began as a lifelong hobby turned into a full-time career as a professional pet photographer 5 years ago when I decided I much preferred spending my work day playing on the ground with cats, dogs and bunnies than sitting in an office in front of a computer. Since then, I've worked with many private and commercial clients, appeared in many magazines and books and have been named Best Bay Area Pet Photographer every year in SFGate since 2008.

My style is very contemporary and candid with a focus on capturing animals’ individuality and uniqueness with a few dashes of humor and action thrown in for good measure. I prefer working on location at places like beaches, parks and homes where pets feel comfortable and can act like themselves.

Working with pets on a daily basis also allows me to indulge my other passion: helping animal welfare and rescue groups. In addition to photographing My Mutt posters for Pet Food Express which supports such groups all over Northern California, I also serve on the board of Give A Dog A Bone and the advisory board of VETSOS .

If you'd like to see more of my work or are interested in having your pet photographed please stop by Mark Rogers Photography or give me a call at (415) 378-8602.

Nikki Weidner (South Bay, Peninsula)

A lifelong animal lover and pet parent, some years ago I left the corporate world to follow my passion and launched a pet care service. As part of this new direction, I started photographing pets – clients’ and my own - as a hobby. I received so much personal gratification and positive

feedback that I chose to pursue photography as a profession. Now, my photography continues rewarding me through wonderful opportunities to meet so many lovable animals and their interesting humans.

Pet Food Express' My Mutt program is a perfect fit with the many animal welfare causes I support. I am a proud member of HeARTs Speak, an international group of photographers who donate their time and talent to help save homeless animals through professional portraiture. Additionally, I participate annually in the Smile For A Cure campaign, through which photographers donate their session fees to raise funds for the fight against canine cancer. I also do fundraising photography for rescue groups, such as the Pets With Santa photo shoot held each year at the Redwood City Pet Food Express, benefiting Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue.

For more information about me, or to schedule a photo shoot, please visit my website, NikRaye Photography, or my pet photography blog, TailSnaps, or call me at 408.394.7206.

Pam Harvey-Merrill (Contra Costa County, Napa)

"Photography has always been my passion. From the time I was a youngster, I always had a camera in my pocket."

I was fortunate enough to work on the water front for an ocean carrier (sorry, in the office) for 35 1/2 years. During that time, I was given free rein to take photos any time, any where as long as I was on my lunch hour or coffee break. With permission from the captain of the vessels, I was allowed go aboard whenever they were in port. One time, I even talked my way onto one of the tug boats that was assigned to assist one of our vessels that was getting ready to depart. The other tug was backing up, "posed" under the humongous bow of the vessel, the sun was setting and the sky line of San Francisco was in the back ground. What a shot!!!

And then, 9-11 happened and I was no longer allowed to do what I loved to do. Someone mentioned the word "security risk".

Good news... a short time later, I "graduated" (some people say "retired") from my job with the ocean carrier. Next thing you know someone mentioned to me that Pet Food Express just happened to be looking for another photographer. It has been about 5+ years now of getting to do what I love to do and I could not be happier. I've yet to meet a dog or cat that has complained that the photo made them look fat.

Scott Broecker (Carmel)

Scott Broecker is a lifelong dog lover who combines his artistic style with his photography skills to capture the essence of the dogs he photographs. As photographer, writer, and co-owner of Coastal Canine magazine Scott’s life has totally gone to the dogs, and of course, that’s a good thing. Scott has also been the My Mutt photographer for the Carmel Pet Food Express store since it’s opening in June 2009.

Scott and his wife, Carie, share their home with 3 cats and 3 dogs. Both have been active volunteers in animal rescue work since 1999. His work with dogs was inspired by their 16 year old Shepard Mix, Sunshine, who passed away in July 2010 and was the epitome of joy and love and all things dog. Scott's work can be viewed at www.scottbroecker.com, www.bytheseapetphotos.com, and www.coastalcaninemag.com. He can be reached at 831-277-9539.

At Pet Food Express, we provide the largest selection of holistic, healthy, and safe pet foods and treats you will encounter as well as a great selection of high quality accessories and supplies. Our buyers constantly search for innovative, useful, and reliable products and we are always listening for our customers’ wants and needs. Since our stores are smaller than some of the national chains, we regularly evaluate each category to make sure that we have the right selection of products that will benefit you. Because of our extensive training programs and history of personally serving customers, PFE is eagerly sought after by the best manufacturers to represent their products. This enables us to stay at the forefront of the newest and best of what the industry has to offer. In addition, we have been developing our own products in categories where we think we can offer an important difference to you. Marketed under the “Smart” label, we create products that will be as good as or better than the best products in a category at a competitive price. We also stock unique items that are typically found only in smaller, independent pet stores. Have a question? Talk with one of our sales associates—They will be more than happy (and qualified!) to assist you in purchasing the ideal products for your pets.

What won’t you find at Pet Food Express? We don’t sell animals. Instead, we provide more support and assistance to Bay Area shelters and rescues than any other retailer so that they can do the honorable job of finding pet-parents for millions of otherwise homeless animals. You also won’t find foods or treats that contain ingredients we feel are of questionable quality Safety Assurance program. We also test for lead and follow the children’s safety standards established by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. After all, if we won’t give it to our pets, we won’t sell it for yours!

Pet Food Express: Michael & Mark’s Story

Michael & Mark’s Story

Find out how Pet Food Express got started.

PFE Owners - Mark Witriol and Michael Levy with Snap and Harry

Michael and Mark have been business partners for nearly 20 years(that's 140 in dog years!), running Pet Food Express. You'd think by now they would have agreed on the story of how they met and formed their business—but as it has been many years, they still need to remind each other about some of the details.

It all started back when Michael was a boy of 7 and wasn’t allowed to get a dog, so he began bringing home stray cats.  At 16, he finally got his first dog, a German Shepherd, and trained him to respond to many commands off-leash. Years later, while attending City College of San Francisco in 1976, Michael decided to start a dog training business in order to supplement student loans (During this time, Mark was having his Bar Mitzvah). By the 1980s, Michael's little business (called Pro-Train) had become the largest professional dog training company in Northern California. He also opened his first “brick and mortar” store in 1980, in West Portal for dog training and pet supplies.

In 1986 (the same year “Top Gun” hit movie theaters), Michael changed the name of his store to Pet Food Express, and the company started expanding its paw print in the Bay Area.By the time co-owners Michael and Mark finally met in 1992, Pet Food Express had expanded to three locations.

Getting Michael and Mark to discuss how they actually met resulted in this conversation:

Mark: My girlfriend brought home a dog. I didn’t want a dog. The dog’s name was Maxine and she fed the dog Nutro MAX. Good, I can remember the name of the food because of the dog. Maxine and MAX. The problem was the only place we could get the food was from the vet.

Michael: Or so he thought.

Mark: Or so I thought. The vet was in Marin, and he wasn’t open on the weekends or the evenings and I worked in Berkeley. I would have to drive there on my lunch hour to get the food, but often he was out or didn’t have the right size bag. But my girlfriend would not take any excuses. If I didn’t bring the right food, I was in trouble.

When my girlfriend wasn’t at home, I fed the dog spaghetti. Why? I liked spaghetti; I was eating spaghetti, so the dog got spaghetti. When I got a second dog—a white poodle—I added red tomato sauce, because when the dog was eating, it looked like he had just eaten a deer.

One day, Michael opened his third store, in Berkeley, right next to my electronics business.

Michael: I thought we met at the Cow Palace dog show?

Mark: We did, but I stopped in your store first but you didn’t know who I was. Michael tried to get me to switch foods, but I wasn’t listening.

Michael:But 99 percent of our customers would.

Mark:My girlfriend dragged me to the dog show at the Cow Palace to look for a poodle, so I didn’t really have anything to do. Michael and I started talking. I got the book of coupons he was handing out. Then we realized we had businesses right next to each other.

In the electronics business, I had to fight just to make $5 on a fax machine. Michael started telling me how good the pet food business was—and that dogs don’t write bad checks.

Michael: We saw it as a great opportunity. Mark had a lot of retail experience, which I lacked at that time.

And that was the beginning –almost 20 years ago. In 1993, Michael and Mark opened another store, this time in San Leandro with their first self-service pet wash. In 1996, Pet Food Express expanded to 10 stores; in 1999 to 15; in 2006 to 28 and currently the company has 43 Northern California locations—with more coming soon!

“We are becoming a larger and larger business, and we view ourselves as a well-run operation,” Michael said. “But we cannot forget where we came from and how important it is to act like an independent and to have a personal touch on everything we do.”

(Just in case you're concerned or curious, Mark no longer feeds his dogs spaghetti.)

Mark: I actually do still feed the dogs spaghetti. By the way, although I did not want the dog initially, I came to love the dog—even though she ate 38 pairs of my girlfriend’s shoes, three couches, sheet rock and bricks.  When my girlfriend left (over the dog), I took Maxine and the poodle, Nick, even though it was my girlfriend’s dog.

Our state-of-the-art Self-Service Pet Washes provide a unique and useful service for our customers. We truly try to be a welcome asset to each of the local communities that we serve!

Customers are truly #1

All retailers make this claim but how many of them actually live it?  We see our customers as people, not just as wallets.  We know that you love your pets as we love ours so we discover and honor the needs and wants of each individual that visits us.  Shop with us and you will see that we offer a different environment in which to shop for your special friends.  In order to be effective in this, we educate and train our employees more than any other pet retailer in the U.S. but more than anything else, it is our employees’ love and passion for pets that sets them apart and inspires them to do whatever it takes to earn your trust and make you happy.

Our Low Price Guarantee

Pet Food Express will beat our competitors’ price on any product that we sell. If a competitor’s price is:

$10.00 or less - We will beat the competitor’s price by 10% of the price.

Over $10.00 - We will beat the competitor’s price by $1.00.

For example, if someone is selling an item for $20.00 and we are selling it for more, then our price would be $19.00. If someone was selling an item for $4.00 and we were selling it for $5.00, then our price to the consumer would be $3.60.

Who is the competition?
We consider any retail store in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area to be our competition.

Verification of the price
We must be able to verify the competitor's price and availability through a current advertisement, receipt (less than 30 days old), or phone call to the seller in order to beat the price.

Product eligibility
The product and packaging must be identical to what we are selling. If the competitor has a limit on the quantity of items available or that a consumer may buy at the price we are beating, we will impose the same limit. If there are any other terms or conditions on the sale, we reserve the right to match them. Distressed, seconded, or damaged goods are excluded from this guaranty.

This policy is subject to change at any time at our sole discretion.

Return Policy

We will gladly refund any item purchased from Pet Food Express within 30 days of the original purchase date as long as it is in new condition, with all packaging and accompanied by the original purchase receipt. Items not meeting these conditions may be exchanged or returned for store credit.

At our discretion, cash or check purchases over $50 may be refunded by check from our main office (allow 10 business days). Debit card purchases will be refunded in cash, provided that we have sufficient funds on hand. Credit card purchases will be credited to your card the same day (your bank will post it to your account according to its policy).

We require your name, address and a photo i.d. for all refunds (Calif. Civil Code Sec. 1723).
