My Mutt Stories: Claire Bear
Featured My Mutt... "Claire Bear"
Claire Bear was rescued from a puppy mill, along with 60 other basset hounds, four years ago. She was being used as a breeder, and was subsequently un-socialized and extremely fearful. She’d been placed in a foster home - where she’d been living under a bed - for the year and a half before I adopted her. It was such a learning experience for the both of us. She was just a shell of a dog, not exhibiting any dog behaviors, nor any emotions (except fear) due to the extreme trauma she endured. I was very patient, hired a behaviorist, and slowly gained her trust over the first year. I only brought a few people into my house to meet her and basically let her be who/what she wanted to be.
Claire Bear will never be a "normal" dog, but she lives the way a normal dog should live. She wags her tail on the way to "beddy bye" if I'm standing back away from her, but she will take deli chicken from my hand only on rare occasions, and has never licked my face nor played with toys. But I can tell that she knows I love her.
