NAPA -- This city's Bel Aire Plaza's Pet Food Express store's new Cat Adoption Center celebrates its grand opening Saturday. It's a new concept in the Napa Valley officials said.
In partnership with the Napa County Animal Shelter, Pet Food Express' Cat Adoption Center provides "a new venue for the public to meet (the shelter's) adoptable cats and kittens, (in) a healthy environment for the pets, with 12 large living areas, a 'meet and greet' room and fresh circulating air," they said.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a noon ribbon cutting, they said.

All felines adopted from the center "will go to their new homes spayed or neutered, microchipped and with all of their vaccinations up-to-date," officials said. "The adoption package also includes a bag of premium food and a 20 percent coupon for supplies at Pet Food Express."

The Napa Cat Adoption Center is the fifth one at Pet Food Express stores, officials said. More than 650 cats and kittens have been adopted from the Walnut Creek Pet Food Express location alone since its 2010 opening, they said.

A company spokesman said the firm isn't planning to include dogs and puppies.

"Cats seem to tolerate the housing units, and dogs are more difficult," spokesman Mike Murray said. "Also, the cat population is a greater problem, with ferals and all that."

Animal shelter officials will continue doing mobile dog adoption events in front of the stores, he said.

Whether a store gets an adoption center depends on size and the ability to expand, Murray said, adding he's not sure which other locations will add them.

In Napa, cats and kittens will be available for public viewing during store hours, and store staff will be there to help "in the quiet and secure 'meet and greet' room" officials said.

Trained volunteers are on site from 3 to 6 p.m. daily to answer questions and complete the adoption application process.

Napa's Pet Food Express, 3916 Bel Aire Plaza, is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
