The Best Places to Buy Pet Food in the Sacramento Area (and the worst)

May 28, 2013

Deciding what to feed your dog or cat can be overwhelming. Sadly, the majority of the dog and cat food brands that you see in regular grocery stores are the equivalent of feeding your pet potato chips and Twinkies for every meal. Luckily, there are many great foods out there for our pets. For dogs, you can check out the Dog Food Advisor web site to learn more about good quality dog foods (and also learn what brands to avoid). It is a little harder to find the best cat foods, but many are reviewed at Pet Food Advisor.

In Sacramento, there are several great places to buy dog or cat food. With knowledgeable staff and quality products, you can rest assured that you will be getting products that are providing good nutrition for your dog or cat. At the best stores you will only find quality foods so you don't have to wonder about the food that you purchase. It is also important to note that none of these stores sells puppies or kittens, however they may invite local shelters or rescue groups to hold rescue events.

Here is a list of some of the best (and worst) places in the Sacramento area to buy your pet food.

Best Local Stores:

Pet Department Store: 4747 J Street, Sacramento: Don't let the name fool you, they don't sell pets, but they do sell quality foods for pets and also offer great advice. Selling healthy foods long before it became commonplace the Pet Department Store has a loyal following that rave about the place. If you buy large bags of food, they will even carry the items to your car.

Pets to Go: 9098 Laguna Main Street, Elk Grove and 9328 Elk Grove Boulevard: Family owned and operated, they do sell reptiles, but they also sell quality dog and cat foods.

Trends 'n Treats: 8929 Madison Ave., Fair Oaks A relative newcomer to the area, opening in 2007, the small store offers only quality pet foods and treats. They also have frequent events such as bringing in pet photographers and hosting meet up groups.

Pet Food Express: 2531 Fair Oaks Boulevard, Sacramento and 1009 Galleria Blvd. Roseville: Starting out in the San Francisco Bay area in 1986, Pet Food Express expanded and finally came to the Sacramento area a few years back. They have a long history of selling only quality foods and also have a great record of charitable giving. They constantly host adoption events for nonprofits across the area and a few of their stores even have built in areas for adoption.

Western Feed and Pet Supply: Multiple locations in Sacramento, Davis, Gold River, Folsom, Roseville, Orangevale and Carmichael: While many people think of "feed" stores as catering to livestock, Western Feed carries a great selection of dog and cat food. They avoid carrying products with corn, wheat and soy, knowing that many dogs have allergies to these foods.

Worst Places to Buy Pet Food:

Wal-Mart- On a recent trip to a Wal-Mart Superstore there was not one quality dog food on the shelves. Don't even bother.

Most Grocery Stores: With the exception of Trader Joe's, Sprouts and Costco, most chain grocery stores do now carry any quality dry or canned dog foods. Some stores, including Raley's and Bel Air, carry high quality frozen dog food.
