Treating Fleas: Natural Control Options

Many of today's more environmentally conscious pet owners tend to prefer more natural (less chemical-oriented) methods of flea control. Many natural products can aid in flea control. Some of the more readily available products include d-Limonene, citronella, pennyroyal, eucalyptus, cedar oil and other citrus extracts.

These products are quite effective as a "quick kill" adulticide, but do not kill eggs and larvae. Also, they provide little or no residual control. Pyrethrins, which are extracted from the chrysanthemum flower, are also very effective in flea control.

In addition, flea combs are an excellent natural means of flea control. Using the comb once a day will help you keep tabs on the situation and allow you to comb out fleas and flea dander.

When choosing a natural flea control alternative you should lightly treat your pet the first time. After treatment, monitor your cat for signs of skin irritation because some pets may be sensitive to these products.
