Puppy Kindergarten is a SIRIUS innovation.
The classes are formatted so that you can start as soon as possible, with any module.
Learn how to toilet train, chew toy train and safely socialize your pup with people; address puppy biting, whining and crying; prepare your puppy for handling by veterinarians and groomers and prevent household behavior problems such as house soiling, destructive chewing, and chewing. This is a set of four classes designed to ensure that you receive urgent training at the earliest possible time. There are three elements of puppy training that must be addressed in a puppy’s first three months of life:
1) Puppies must be thoroughly, yet safely, socialized to people so that later in life, they do not become wary or fearful of children, strangers, or men.
2) Puppies must learn to be gentle with their mouths so they do not inflict serious injury on people or animals as their jaws grow substantially stronger.
3) Puppies must learn how to live in a human home so they do not damage your belongings or suffer from separation anxiety.
Though not as urgent as the above items, puppies will be introduced to basic manners and obedience commands as well.
The earlier you address these behavior and training issues, the easier it will be. If your puppy has not yet arrived, or is younger than 8 weeks, you are welcome to attend classes without your pup. PK comprises a series of four workshops. You may start with any session in the sequence.
Requirements: Puppies must have the first DHLPP or DHPP vaccine (specifically Distemper and Parvo) at least 7 days before the first session.
Puppy 1 - For puppies between 10 and 16 weeks
Classes specifically focus on teaching bite inhibition (gentle jaws), socialization with other dogs and people (especially children, men and strangers), calming and handling, attention, off-leash household manners/obedience and the prevention of behavior and temperament problems. Special emphasis is paid to phasing out the need for food lures and rewards for reliable verbal and hand signal, off-leash control (around the home or on walks), yet promoting the continued use of food treats for classical conditioning - to teach dogs to thoroughly enjoy the company of people and other dogs.
Requirements: Puppies must be between 10-18 weeks old at the start date of class with 2 DHLPP vaccinations, one of which must have been given after 8 weeks of age and at least 5 days prior to start of class.
Puppy 2 - for graduates of Puppy 1
Early puppy training is as easy as it is enjoyable. Much more challenging though, is to ensure that your puppy maintains bite inhibition, remains socialized and friendly to other dogs and people, and continues to pay heed to you instructions while working through adolescence. Training focuses on proofing verbal control without the need for food lures or rewards, or any other training tools. Exercises include distance sits in play (for the home, yard, dog parks and off-leash walks), settle down, rock-solid stays, and both off-leash and on-leash walking and heeling. Puppy 2 will help you teach your adolescent pup to be calm, attentive and responsive and to respond quickly, willingly and happily, especially when distracted, off-leash, and at a distance.
Requirements: Graduates of SIRIUS® Puppy 1; under 8 months of age; proof of rabies vaccine.
Sirius Adult Classes
Dog Training I
An excellent class for dogs that have never taken a class before or for dogs needing to brush up on rusty obedience skills. Reward training techniques make training adolescent and adult dogs a peaceful and enjoyable experience. Initial exercises focus on calming, settling-down and regaining attention to facilitate teaching basic manners - sit, down, stand, stay, walking on-leash and polite greetings.
Requirements: This class is for friendly dogs over 19 weeks. Proof of current vaccinations required.
