Sirius Dog Training at Pet Food Express Oakland

Trainer: Julie Rector

When other little girls were playing with dolls, and having pretend tea-parties, Julie was training her brother to be a dog. Her father had to get her a real dog so her brother could have a normal childhood, although he still plays a mean game of fetch. Julie worked with Tramp, and made him into a model canine citizen, and continued that practice throughout her adulthood. In 2003, Julie got her current dog, Ranger, and enrolled him in classes with Sirius. Julie enjoyed the classes so much she shortly began assisting Bobbi Durston with her classes in Concord. Employed full-time in the insurance industry, Julie has nonetheless found time to regularly assist with Sirius puppy classes since 2004, spent time as a volunteer at the Humane Society of the North Bay, and has greatly increased her knowledge of dog behavior and positive reinforcement training techniques.Training time for Ranger hasn't ended, and it will never end for Julie, as she continues to grow her knowledge and skill as a Sirius trainer.

Class Description and Pricing

Cost: $200 for 5 weeks of class

Puppy 1
Our puppy classes specifically focus on teaching bite inhibition (gentle jaws), socialization with other dogs and people (especially children, men and strangers), calming and handling, attention, off-leash household manners/obedience and the prevention of behavior and temperament problems. Special emphasis is paid to phasing out the need for food lures and rewards for reliable verbal and hand signal, off-leash control (around the home or on walks), yet promoting the continued use of food treats for classical conditioning - to teach dogs to thoroughly enjoy the company of people and other dogs.

Requirements: Pups must be between 10 and 16 weeks of age at the start date of class with 2 DHLPP vaccinations. The second round must have been administered after 8 weeks of age, but at least 5-7 days prior to the first session of class.

Puppy 2 - for graduates of Puppy 1
Early puppy training is as easy as it is enjoyable. Much more challenging though, is to ensure that your puppy maintains bite inhibition, remains socialized and friendly to other dogs and people, and continues to pay heed to you instructions while working through adolescence. Training focuses on proofing verbal control without the need for food lures or rewards, or any other training tools. Exercises include distance sits in play (for the home, yard, dog parks and off-leash walks), settle down, rock-solid stays, and both off-leash and on-leash walking and heeling. Puppy 2 will help you teach your adolescent pup to be calm, attentive and responsive and to respond quickly, willingly and happily, especially when distracted, off-leash, and at a distance.

Requirements: Graduates of SIRIUS® Puppy 1; under 8 months of age; proof of rabies vaccine.

Sirius Adult Classes
Courteous Canine - For friendly dogs older than 17 weeks.
An excellent class for dogs that have never taken a class before or for dogs needing to brush up on rusty obedience skills. Reward training techniques make training adolescent and adult dogs a peaceful and enjoyable experience. Initial exercises focus on calming, settling-down and regaining attention to facilitate teaching basic manners - sit, down, stand, stay, walking on-leash and polite greetings.

Requirements: Older than 17 weeks old; friendly to people and other dogs; proof of rabies vaccine.
