Volunteer

Volunteer with your local shelter or rescue

Thanks to the life-saving work performed by hundreds of animal rescues and shelters throughout the California, thousands of animals find forever homes each month! We are proud to partner with many of these heroic organizations, and believe that together we can find homes for every adoptable pet!

Rescues and shelters would not be able to do their great work without the help of volunteers. Volunteering your time can be a rewarding experience for you, and your whole family. If you are interested in volunteering with a pet organization in your local neighborhood, Pet Food Express is here to help! Email volunteer@petfoodexpress.com, our team will help answer your questions and guide you to a local organization in need of people like you!

Pet Food Express: Kitten Season Skip to main content

Kitten Season

On behalf of California’s kitten population, thank you for all of your help!

Our Kitten Season fundraiser is an annual effort to collect life-saving supplies for homeless baby kittens! Over the past few years, we have collected more than $500,000 in essential kitten supplies that helped support more than 100 local rescues and shelters.

Kitten Season is also the perfect time to talk about the essential need for new kitten foster families. Most shelters and rescues have more kittens than they can handle, and just a few weeks of a new foster family’s time can make all the difference!

In California’s temperate climate, kitten season lasts a long time, and shelters and rescues run out of the supplies that they need to care for kittens very quickly. Our Kitten Season fundraiser is an easy way for you to help! Just come into any Pet Food Express store and our associates can show you exactly what supplies our partners have requested. You’ll even get 20% off your donation!

Of course, what would Kitten Season be without the chance to bring home a new kitty or two of your own! Eleven of our stores have Cat Adoption Centers where you can meet adoptable kitties from local shelters and rescues, and lots more stores have adoption events on weekends! If you’re pondering a more temporary kitty solution, think about fostering! Email fosterakitten@petfoodexpress.com for more information about kitten fostering opportunities in your area!

Oakland Mayor Proclaims January 11 Pet Food Express Day!

We're honored to receive Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf's recognition for our work with animal rescues and police K-9's.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Proclaims January 11 Pet Food Express Day!
(New Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf visited PFE HQ on Jan. 7 to thank us for giving back to the City of Oakland and helping California police dogs.)

Pet Food Express employees were thrilled when new Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf offered her first proclamation, declaring Sunday, January 11 as Pet Food Express Day in Oakland!

In one of her first public appearances, Mayor Schaaf visited Pet Food Express in Oakland to announce to the city that we were the first recipient of the “Giver” Award from the National Retail Federation.

“Pet Food Express reflects the best of what Oakland is today and what it can be tomorrow,” Mayor Schaff said.

The “Giver” Award was presented to Pet Food Express Founder and President Michael Levy in New York on January 11. The honor recognizes the work Pet Food Express has done to help California police dogs. More than $600,000 has been raised over the last six years to provide life-saving equipment—such as bullet-proof vests—to California police dogs.

“I know how hard these dogs work. They deserve to be well taken care of,” Michael Levy told the San Francisco Chronicle.

The seventh-annual Cover Your K-9 fundraiser will be held in all Pet Food Express stores this summer, with all proceeds from the self-service dog washes going to police dogs.

Aside from standard data rates and transportation (for grand prize winner), there is no cost to participate in this contest.  Pet Food Express is not responsible for fraudulent calls or e-mails made to Entrants by third parties.
Except where prohibited by law, entry into the Contest constitutes winner’s consent to PFE’s use of winner’s name, biography, likeness, voice, photographs, video, opinions, statements, hometown, state and country for promotional purposes in any manner, without consideration, notice, review or consent. Potential prize winner must sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility, as applicable, a Release of Liability form, and a Publicity Release (where not prohibited by law) within (a) ten (10) days following attempted notification. Any attempt by any person to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest is a violation of criminal and civil laws, and, should such an attempt be made, Pet Food Express reserves the right to seek damages and other remedies from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. PFE’s failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision or any other provision of these Official Rules.

RELEASE AND INDEMNITY. By entering the Contest, each Entrant, to the maximum extent permitted by law, agrees to forever and irrevocably release, indemnify and hold harmless Pet Food Express and its affiliates, subsidiaries, partners, or agents and their respective employees, officers, directors, and representatives from and against all claims, damages or liabilities arising in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from Entrant’s participation and/or entry in the Contest, any Contest-related activities, and/or Entrant’s acceptance, receipt, use, misuse, or possession of or participation in any prize awarded in the Contest. About Us

We’re pet fanatics. We’ll adopt the older dog with hip issues and we always have room for one more cat. Our trunks are filled with leashes, tennis balls and doggie water bottles. We’re a little bit crazy about our pets, and our passion for them has been the catalyst for our success, from our strong growth and national industry awards to our five straight years (2009 - 2014) of being a Top Bay Area Workplace.

Pet Food Express Employment
Our Strategy

Our strategy is simple: if we wouldn't give a product to our own pets, we won't sell it to our customersWe ban products with unnamed animal by-products and other suspect ingredients and test all our chewable products for lead, making sure they exceed the safety standards for children's toys. We trust and empower our people to do the right thing every day and value service to others above all else.

"Nothing is more rewarding than receiving a lick on the face by a grateful pet." - Michael, Manager Trainee

Our Culture

We're at 50+ stores and counting, but that doesn't mean we act like a large corporation. We're still owned and operated by the same two guys, Michael and Mark. Our executives visit stores every weekend and know the names of pretty much everyone at our companyInstead of the water cooler, we gather around the company dog park.

Pet Food Express: California Transparency in Supply Chains Act Skip to main content

California Transparency in Supply Chains Act

The California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010 went into effect on January 1, 2012, with the goal of eliminating slavery and human trafficking from global product supply chains through increased disclosure of corporate actions.

We at Pet Food Express are committed to socially responsible behavior. Treatment with dignity and respect, safe working conditions, and fair compensation should be a universal reality in the workplace, and we are pleased to see new legislation making this a priority.

Pet Food Express expects our suppliers to comply with all applicable international and local laws, rules and regulations during the manufacture and distribution of merchandise sold in our stores. Though at this time we do not engage in verification, audits, or certification requirements of our suppliers to evaluate and address the risk of human trafficking or slavery, we certainly do not intentionally or knowingly do business with any company or person that uses slaves or subjects people to trafficking.

In order to promote prevention of slavery and human trafficking, we do provide mandatory education, particularly with respect to mitigating risks within the supply chain of products, to all employees and management directly responsible for supply chain management.

We understand and appreciate that companies have an important responsibility to make a stand on this unfortunate global issue.

Pet Food Express: Off-Leash Dogs in the GGNRA Skip to main content

Off-Leash Dogs in the GGNRA

Pet Food Express continues to support an off-leash Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Pet Food Express GGNRA Support Summary

WHY WE OPPOSE THE GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL RECREATION AREA’S DOG PLAN

  •  Areas where our dogs have been welcome to walk or play off-leash for decades could be severely cut or banned outright under the latest GGNRA dog plan. The new rules would affect off-leash as well as on-leash access at Crissy Field, Fort Funston, Muir Beach, Rancho Corral de Tierra on the slopes of Montara, and many other park lands.

  • The San Francisco Board of Supervisors recently unanimously passed a resolution objecting to the GGNRA plan, which prompted Sierra Club head Arthur Feinstein to say that the board is pandering in order to “gain points with a minority of extremist dog owners” (SF Gate, “Park Service Not Around to Hear From Dog Lovers” 10/22/13).  However, SF dog-owners are far from being a small group, with the 2010 census confirming that there are actually more dogs than children in San Francisco. We believe that as responsible citizens, we must be realistic and fore-thinking about how to accommodate nearly 120,000 local dogs in a city with limited space.

  • There hasn’t been a single peer-reviewed, site-specific study - as required by law - that supports such a drastic restriction of dog-friendly areas. The GGNRA should be obligated to provide a factual report before they pass legislation.

  • The Golden Gate National Recreation Area was set up to be a RECREATION AREA for a densely populated, urban area. These trails and beaches have been set aside for dog walking since the original pet policy in 1979.

  • If the dog management plan is adopted, the majority of the Bay Area’s dogs will have to find somewhere else to go, overcrowding the few dog parks available. That will create more dog-related problems than the GGNRA proposal allegedly solves.

  • We are not suggesting unlimited dog walking access, and we advocate responsible dog ownership in all GGNRA lands. But there is no credible reason to deny fair and reasonable access for both on- and off-leash dog walking that has taken place on GGNRA land for more than 50 years.

WHAT PET FOOD EXPRESS IS DOING TO KEEP THE GGNRA OFF-LEASH

As a company – and more personally, as dog lovers who are alarmed by the suggested changes - Pet Food Express feels strongly about this issue, and has been a proud participant in the cause of keeping the GGNRA off-leash.  In the first half of 2014, we assisted this movement in a myriad of ways:

  • Leading up to the San Francisco Town Hall Forum on GGNRA Dog Management Plan, and immediately after, we devoted the main page of our company website to educating the public and generating support.

  • Pet Food Express’s booth space at the Cow Palace Dog Show was dedicated to collecting signatures and increasing awareness regarding GGNRA's proposed plan.

  • Beginning the last week of January and throughout the month of February, we hosted dog group volunteers at information tables in many of our locations.

  • In February, we joined with Supervisor Scott Wiener on radio ads which broadcast on KFOG, as well as running ads in the Marina Times.

  • Postcards protesting the changes were provided to interested customers in all stores within the affected area of the Bay. Our stores were also designated drop-off locations for postcards to policy-makers, and the cost of postage assumed by Pet Food Express, to ensure that every off-leash supporter who wished to be heard would be. The National Park Service later confirmed that by the time the public comment period ended on February 18th, they had received 3000+ postcards from our customers.

  • Banners and posters were distributed to Pet Food Express stores in San Francisco and Marin to raise customer awareness.

We are just one of the many groups opposing the GGNRA plan. Other opponents of the proposed changes:

U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier
San Francisco Board of Supervisors (unanimous)
San Francisco SPCA
Marin Humane Society
Marin Unleashed
SFDOG
SF PAWS
DogPAC of SF

and many more…

Bay Area Pet Fair

Join us September 15 & 16, 2018 for the largest gathering of adoptable animals in California history.

Pet Food Express Bay Area Pet Fair September 15 & 16, 2018

The Bay Area Pet Fair is the largest pet adoption and pet lovers' event in California!

The Bay Area Pet Fair, hosted by Pet Food Express, is the largest pet adoption event in California! This year’s Pet Fair will be September 15 & 16 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. Last year's fair featured more than 75 rescues and shelters and welcomed over 120,000 attendees, more than 1,600 of whom adopted a new pet. We expect 2018 to be bigger and better than ever!

The Bay Area Pet Fair is fun for everyone in the family! Admission and parking are free, pets on a leash are welcome and encouraged, and there will be live shows and demos, activities for people and pets, a variety of food and drink options, lots of giveaways and prizes, and tons of samples and goodies to take home.

Since Pet Food Express began hosting the Bay Area Pet Fair in 2011, 6,440 pets have been adopted, more than a pet a minute during fair hours! And for each animal adopted at the fair, Pet Food Express donates an additional $50 to the group, totaling more than $364,000 in the last 7 years! Mike Murray, Pet Food Express’ Director of Community Outreach, calls the Pet Fair an “opportunity to educate people about the importance of rescue and adoption, find hundreds of homeless pets forever homes, and provide a fun weekend of activities for the whole family.”

Mark your calendars and save the date to join us in sunny Pleasanton this September!

Pet Food Express: Save a Kitten Skip to main content

Save a Kitten

On behalf of California’s kitten population, thank you very much!

Pet Food Express Save A Kitten Fundraiser

Our Save a Kitten fundraiser is an annual effort to collect life-saving supplies for homeless, baby kittens! Kitten Season is the perfect time to share information on the essential need for new kitten foster families. This year, we collected more than $122,040 in essential kitten supplies that Save A Kitten - Foster, Adopt, Donate helped support more than 100 California rescues and shelters.

Why do we do it? In California’s temperate climate, kitten season lasts a long time, meaning there are more baby kittens than shelters and rescues can handle. We wanted to help, so we began collecting items needed for kittens’ survival, and shared with our rescue partners and their generous foster families.

Your donations are greatly appreciated—and thankfully they grow every year, as we see more and more kittens arrive! Our stores really get a kick out of delivering the kitten supplies to the shelters, and we’d love it if you would join us for the visit. (You might even get to hold a little fuzzy recipient!)

Every May, Pet Food Express hosts our annual Kitten Season fundraiser at all our stores! And a friendly reminder, we have nine stores with full-time cat adoption centers, so if you’re ever looking for a new kitty, you know where to go!

Pet Food Express: Suspect Ingredients Skip to main content

Suspect Ingredients

What are they and what do they do?

Unspecified Animal By-Product and By-Product Meal
Animal by-products and animal by-product meals may include mammal and poultry intestines, organs, heads, feet and bones. The proportion of intestines and organs (good and highly nutritious) versus heads, feet and bones (less nutritious and potentially too high in minerals), as well as the specific animals used, may vary considerably, even from batch to batch. Although this ingredi-ent is not necessarily bad, the inconsistencies allowable under the regulations can result in quality variations that may cause digestive problems, including vomiting, diarrhea, gas and refusal to eat.

Animal Fat
Animal fat may include mammal and poultry fat and comes primarily from slaughterhouse waste and grocery store fat trimmings classified as inedible for human consumption. Other sources, such as recycled restaurant grease, are also allowable. Again, although this ingredient is not necessarily bad, the variability of sources permitted under the regulations can result in quality variations that may cause digestive problems, including vomiting, diarrhea, gas and refusal to eat.

Meat and Bone Meal
Meat and bone meal is made from slaughterhouse leftovers and bone. The resulting ingredient is low in protein (less than 50%) and high in ash (more than 35%). High ash levels are often implicated in kidney disease, a leading cause of death of dogs and cats in the U.S.

BHA, BHT, Propylene Glycol
BHA has been shown in laboratory studies to cause cancerous tumors. BHT may become toxic or may cause other chemicals to become toxic when found in certain combinations. Propylene glycol is illegal to use in cat foods as it is proven to cause a severe bleeding disorder.

Artificial Colorings and Flavors
Dogs and cats don’t use colors to feed, so why include them? Different colorings have been shown to cause everything from cancer to a wide variety of allergic reactions. Artificial flavors are typically used to make unpalatable things palatable. If it doesn’t taste good enough to eat on its own, then find something better!

Pet Food Express: Answers to commonly asked questions Skip to main content

Answers to commonly asked questions

Have the banned ingredients harmed or killed dogs or cats?
While some of the information we used to help us make this decision is anecdotal (stories of personal experience of pet owners) many scientific studies exist to support our decision. We are happy to furnish you with website references and published scientific study results upon request.

I feed Science Diet/Iams/Eukanuba. What do you sell that I can feed instead?
We understand that these national brands have been around for many years and pet owners who feed them are often very comfortable with how they have performed in the past. We too, feel these brands have been staples in the marketplace. However, national manufacturers now all offer top-of-the-line products which, by their own admission, are their most nutritional superior brands. These are now the only products we carry within these lines. We would be happy to show you any of these foods.

I feed (a food manufactured by a company that we do not sell). What do you sell that I can feed instead?
We sell a wide variety of premier foods, one of which should meet the needs of your pet. In order to decide which food or foods that is, I’ll need to ask you several questions.

My dog/cat will only eat the food I am currently feeding. How can I get him to eat other foods?
Palatability, how food tastes and feels in the pet’s mouth, can be one of the most challenging aspects of ensuring your pet is fed a nutritionally superior diet. It’s easiest to compare our pets to children when it comes to food. What 5 year old would pass up a hot fudge sundae for a bowl of vegetables? But, what parent would allow their 5 year old to eat a hot fudge sundae instead of their daily vegetables? We can all agree the hot fudge sundae isn’t more nutritious, but it sure is tastier. And when it comes to tasty, your dog or cat is more like a 5 year old and less like a responsible parent. So if they won’t be responsible, you have to be. What lower quality pet foods lack in nutrition they make up for in taste. So switching can be tough. Try adding a small amount of warm water, popping food in the microwave for several seconds or topping with canned or raw food. Go slow when transitioning to a new food. It may take or week or several months. This enormous improvement to your pet’s health will be worth the time and effort.

The last time I switched foods my dog/cat got diarrhea/gas/upset stomach. Is that inevitable?
The key to switching foods for an animal with a sensitive digestive tract is to do it slowly. The average dog/cat can switch in 5-7 days. Owners should slowly increase the amount of new food being fed and decrease the amount of the old food. ALWAYS judge your ability to advance this ratio based on your pet’s digestive tract and tell-tale signs such as loose stools, flatulence (stinky gas!) or vomiting. Some animals will switch to new foods with little or no digestive upset. Others may take a month or longer. Whatever your timeline, just remember, you are doing this to improve the health of your pet.

My dog/cat has food allergies. What should I do?
Food allergies account for less than 10% of allergy symptoms (inhalant allergies and environmental allergies comprise the other 90%). However, if your pet does have a food allergy, it is most likely to a protein source such as beef, milk or gluten (the protein portion found in grains). There are many alternative protein foods such as Pinnacle’s Duck & Potato or Trout & Sweet Potato, or try a grain free diet like Taste of the Wild. Additionally, dry and itchy skin can be relieved using skin healthy supplements like salmon oil or topical treatments such as Earthbath’s Oatmeal & Aloe Shampoo.

My veterinarian recommended the food I’m currently feeding. I’m not sure I should switch?
We sell a wide variety of natural, holistic and organic foods, one of which should meet the needs of your pet. In order to decide which food or foods that is, I’ll need to ask you several questions. If you have concerns about changing foods, just bring the bag to your veterinarian and have this discussion with them. Working with the veterinary community is the best way to make sure we end-up with the perfect food for your pet.

My breeder/neighbor/friend/relative/vet recommended the food I’m currently feeding. I’m not sure I should switch?
We sell a wide variety of natural, holistic and organic foods, one of which should meet the needs of your pet. In order to decide which food or foods that is, I’ll need to ask you several questions. If you still have concerns about changing foods, take the bag home and show it to the person who first recommended your current food. I’m guessing they’re going to want to try it, too! But, if for some reason it doesn’t seem like it’s going to work, just bring it back! At PFE you are welcome to return any product, in any condition (yes, even if you opened it and fed it to your pet), for a complete refund or exchange.

What is a natural, holistic or organic pet food?
A natural pet food is one that contains ingredients that are not subjected to chemical processing and contain no additives. Holistic pet foods take this one step further, including fruits and vegetables which offer your pet natural sources of vitamins and other nutrients. Holistic foods can also include glucosamine and chondroitin, a natural aid in joint disease, balanced levels of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for ideal immune and skin health, and pre and probiotics to support digestion. Organic foods are required, by rules set forth by the USDA, to contain ingredients that are grown in chemical free soils (fertilizers and pesticides) and are not genetically modified in any way. We strongly believe in the health benefits of these types of foods and carry an extensive selection of all of them.

Pet Food Express: Pet Food Ingredient Standards Skip to main content

Pet Food Ingredient Standards

Choosing our pet's food is one of the most important decisions most of us make for their health and well-being. The numerous recalls in recent years illustrate the tenuous state of food safety in our country.

The lack of regulatory resources coupled with the rapidly growing number of choices, makes it difficult for a pet owner to determine which brands are better or safer. This is why we are taking the unprecedented step in improving pet safety by introducing our new pet food ingredients standards.

We have found that it is the makeup and quality of the ingredients that accounts for the overall quality of your pet’s food. Some ingredients often found in pet foods are inferior or unnecessary and others, although not inherently unsafe or nutritionally inferior, come from questionable sources and too often vary in composition or quality.

In order to offer greater assurances of safety and consistency in the food we sell, Pet Food Express is doing something no other pet supply company has ever done - we are excluding from our shelves what we feel are suspect ingredients found in dog and cat food and treats. They are:

  • Unspecified animal by-products or animal by-product meals
  • “Animal fat “
  • “Meat and bone meal “
  • BHA, BHT, and propylene glycol
  • Artificial colors or flavors

For 20 years, Pet Food Express has been dedicated to providing a wholesome and safe selection of pet foods and treats. We promise to continue to research the latest developments in pet food so that we can be certain that we are doing the best for our pets….and yours.

Pet Food Express: Lead Alert Skip to main content

Lead Alert

As part of Pet Food Express’ Safety Assurance Program, we are now testing all of our pet toys for lead before they reach our shelves.

No Lead - We test all of our pet toys for lead.

Since no lead standards exist for pet products, we have elected to apply the current child safety standards set by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission. Pet Food Express has invested in a testing tool that allows us to quickly and accurately scan products for a measurement of total lead concentrations**.

In our initial testing, we discovered several products that contained unacceptably high levels of lead. Although we neither received nor heard any reports of injury associated with any of these products, our own discomfort with allowing even a small risk caused us to notify the manufacturers and pull the products from our shelves.

*We use the Federal Child Safety Standards when testing pet toys.

**The instrument we use is a Niton XLt797Y X-ray fluorescence analyzer from Thermo Scientific.  It is a widely used instrument for field and laboratory measurements by both regulatory agencies and businesses.

Unfortunately, over the decades we have been in business, we have seen and responded to a growing number of serious pet product safety crises. We have reacted by increasing our vigilance about the products we choose to sell.

We wish that pet product regulation was more reliable. But until things change, we feel it’s our responsibility as business owners and animal advocates to do the best we can to ensure that the products we sell are as safe as possible.

Our Product Safety Assurance Program was designed to help to strengthen our already strict position in the pet retail industry. We know we won’t accept anything less than the safest quality goods from our suppliers for our pets…and yours and we want you to know it.

Our company is being especially proactive about issues in a way that is literally unheard of in the pet retail industry: We are studying ingredients and voluntarily banning the ones that we feel are questionable in quality and safety; we're testing for lead in all of our dog & cat toys and food bowls before they hit the shelves, in spite of manufacturer standards and we’re continuing to be the pet retail company leaders in providing the most diligent recall information available.

Why are we doing this?
Because we feel it’s the right thing to do. We simply wouldn’t sell it to you if we wouldn’t give it to our own pets.

For further information about the Product Safety Assurance Program, including test results and other findings, resources and product information, please see links above and feel free to contact us should you have any questions or comments.

Giving Tree Fundraiser

Join us during the month of December for our Annual Giving Tree Fundraiser!

Thousands of California’s homeless dogs and cats spend their holiday season in a shelter or with a rescue. Waiting to be adopted into a forever home is very stressful. Although pets can experience anxiety any time of the year, we feel the holidays are the perfect time to work together and provide toys and treats to brighten their days.

Each holiday season, the Pet Food Express Giving Tree fundraiser invites you to Help Us Help Shelter Pets! You can participate in the Giving Tree at any Pet Food Express location by purchasing rescue-approved items (featuring brands like Planet Dog, RC Pet, Kong, Herbsmith, and Bixbi) and donating these items right in the store to a local rescue or shelter in need.

Your generosity has helped bring holiday joy to countless animals in your community! In the last six years, Giving Tree has raised more than $850,000 in products and financial aid for over 200 California animal shelters and rescues, including over $243,000 in 2016 alone!

Protecting your pet takes more than providing a balanced diet, ensuring plenty of exercise and scheduling regular checkups. Having pet insurance means being prepared for the cost of an unexpected accident or illness. Thus protecting you from the financial impact associated with these costs and providing your pet with the best possible care. Pet Food Express recommends Trupanion pet insurance. Pet Food Express: My Mutt Program Skip to main content

My Mutt Program

The My Mutt Program utilizes posters of customers' pets to encourage donations to rescues and shelters.

My Mutt Program - Sully

Your pet has changed your life, in ways both big and small.

And our local rescues and shelters are changing the lives of countless animals who are still searching for their forever homes. Your donation can help these organizations keep their doors open, and make sure more pets – pets just like yours – find a permanent home.

It’s important to Pet Food Express to call attention to the needs of these non-profits, while also saying “kudos” to those who have made donations, and one big way for us to do that is through our My Mutt posters.  When you donate money (and let us know about it) we will celebrate your gift with a My Mutt poster of your pet displayed in one of our stores.

This is how it works:

Donate $250 or more to a non-profit, animal-focused organization of your choice.

Fill out the online information form and email, fax, or upload a copy of your donation receipt from the shelter or rescue.

One of our professional pet photographers will call to arrange a photo shoot of your adorable pet.

You choose the image, and we print a large, high-quality poster on UV-protected Sintra board.

Once it’s on display in the store of your choosing, you get to see your pet every time you shop for food and supplies. (Next time you are in one of our stores, you can check out all the wonderful pictures of people’s pets on the walls and in the windows.)

Some guidelines and information:

Despite its My Mutt name, any animal can appear on a poster: dogs, cats, hamsters, horses, birds – you name it!  And of course, purebreds are included as well.

Those who donate $250 or more are guaranteed to see their poster displayed in the store for six months, and for a donation of $500 or more, the image is guaranteed to be up in the store for at least one year.

Multiple pets – whether photographed individually or together – are treated as distinctive My Mutts, each requiring its own donation. (Therefore a poster picturing two pets up in the stores for six months would require a $500 donation.)

Donations must be within the twelve months preceding the My Mutt application and must be in addition to adoption fees if the donation is occurring at the time of pet adoption.

Your donation should be sent directly to the organization that you are supporting, not Pet Food Express. We just need proof of your donation via a receipt.

While we will do our very best (we really will!) to place your poster in the best location possible, we unfortunately cannot guarantee store location or placement inside or outside of your assigned store. New posters will no longer be placed in the outward-facing windows of any store except SF- Stonestown and Los Gatos, as we are in the process of revamping our window displays company-wide.

My Mutt Photographers

Meet the photographers behind the My Mutt posters.

We are very proud to introduce our team of fourteen professional pet photographers, who together are able to cover My Mutt assignments in the areas surrounding all Pet Food Express locations.  Ranging widely in backgrounds, this talented group is composed of sixteen distinctive and unique styles and aesthetic visions.  What has brought them together – besides a shared commitment to quality and professionalism – is a passion for the goals of the My Mutt program, and a love for animals. You may notice that the majority have worked extensively with rescues and shelters, and are dedicated pet owners themselves.

Quite simply, they are all animal people, and we are absolutely delighted that they have joined the My Mutt Photography Team.

Brandi Burnsed (Greater Sacramento)

Great Shots Photography by Brandi

I have always had a tremendous love for photography. When I was younger I loved to look at old family photos; it was like looking at my very own history book. I made sure as I was growing up that I was taking lots and lots of pictures to add to that history book.  So when my husband and I started a family we both wanted photos of our kids with our family dog. At that time we didn’t have a “professional” camera so we went to the mall to have a portrait taken. As we were finishing up, something caught my dog’s eye and she bolted out the store. She ran right for the automatic doors that lead to the parking lot.

It was one of the most terrifying moments of my life, but she had her doggie guardian angels with her that day. She made it through the parking lot and straight to our truck without incident. However, from that moment on I swore I would never put our family – two or four-legged - in the position of being in an unsafe setting for a photo session. That’s how I fell into being an animal photographer.

When I finally started out with my first “big” camera, I just fell in love! I live in the most amazing farming community in Pleasant Grove, just outside of Roseville, and with both of my kids being very active in 4-H and FFA I have had a lot of opportunities to not only capture their moments but also those of the animals. My passion for taking pictures grew quickly into editing those photos and manipulating them. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to capture others’ stories and contribute to their history book.

Feel free to contact me at Brandibphotos@yahoo.com or www.facebook.com/GreatShotsPhotographyByBrandi.

Diane Davis (Sonoma & Marin County)

D Davis Photography

“I feel the weight of my calling as a photographer every day. I understand that the images I capture today will change people’s lives tomorrow. Sometimes it will be because they are having a bad day and seeing the face they love the very most in the world makes it better, by bringing back feelings of connection and meaning. Sometimes it will be because they didn’t feel good in their own skin; they thought that the world saw them as scared and insecure. Their portraits tell a story of someone beautiful and brave. And sometimes it will just be a smile because that face - it is just a great face.

I also feel the weight of my chosen career in animal rescue. Knowing that the little souls count on you to keep them from being a statistic in a shelter, while knowing you can’t save them all is heartbreaking. Saving some is healing, and making them a cherished member of a family is a blessing. Being able to use my camera to tell their story to help them find homes gives it all meaning.”

Diane lives with her husband of over thirty years, with whom she has three successful adult children, and together they host a “house load” of puppies and kitties. She has been a practicing photographer for over 25 years, and has been intensely involved in animal rescue for three years. She is most proud to be a part of LCAS, an all-volunteer group that has homed over 2,500 animals in 11 years.

I am inspired by the Dog.

The dog has adapted to the human world like no other animal. When primitive man sat around the proverbial campfire, a myriad of beasts lived, breathed, and ate nearby, yet of all of these only the dog emerged as our domesticated

Pet Food Express My Mutt Photographer - J'adore Le Chien Pet Photography

companion.  We humans have been creating images of dogs nearly as long as we have been creating images of humans. As far back as 900 B.C., ancient Egyptians paid tribute to their pets by mummifying and painting them along with their human owners. In the 1600’s, artists such as Diego Velazquez and Anthony Van Dyck painted pastoral scenes showcasing regal hunting dogs alongside their owners.

Us dog lovers know our dogs are so much more than companions.

The dog is slobbery and kooky and soulful and precious. Next to Steve Martin and Jennifer Coolidge, they are the funniest creatures in the world. We are enthralled by them: the gentle gaze, the unconditional love, the stories of dog as hero. When I was a teenager, our Springer spaniel was my coolest and nicest friend. When I failed algebra, she licked my face. When I was lonely, she curled up in bed with me until I wasn’t lonely anymore.
You might think I photograph dogs, but I don’t. Not really.
Here is what I do: I work with dogs and their humans. Small dogs, big dogs, diva dogs, shy dogs, funny dogs, happy dogs, unusual dogs. The dogs and the humans and I get together, and together we make pictures.

I invite you to see some of our creations at www.jadorelechien.com. Lets create some art! ellen@jadorelechien.com or 415.690.0278

GNS Photography (Gil & Sunee M. Leano, East Bay)

Pet Food Express My Mutt Photographer - GNS PhotographyOur earliest childhood memories are full of the funny and affectionate antics of the dogs and cats (and so much more) that were a constant in our households. We were "those" people - the ones that our friends and family reached out to for advice. They always knew that if an animal needed a little extra help, whether it was medical care to guide them down the road to recovery or just a little extra TLC to find trust in humans again, we were the first ones to call. The bonds that we created with these precious animals enriched our lives and gave us the desire to combine our two biggest passions - the love of animals and photography.

What could be more fun than photographing animals?  At GNS Photography, we love capturing animals in their natural, playful form.  If you wait long enough, animals will always provide the perfect picture. We have been partnering with Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation for more than 6 years. It has been such a privilege to be able to photograph so many of their signature events and photograph so many dogs and cats that have been given another chance to find a home of their own. We are also foster parents for ARF, so we get to care for and nurture puppies and dogs and help send them on their way to their wonderful new lives. We reside in the East Bay with our 3 dogs (1 of which we fostered from ARF) and 2 cats.

Many thanks to Pet Food Express - we love being a part of the My Mutt Program. It is an honor and there is nothing like meeting new people and the dogs or cats they either rescued or brought into their lives.

To see examples of our work, please follow us on Facebook or visit us at www.gnsfotos.com.  We can be contacted by email at info@gnsfotos.com.

Julie Weisberg (San Francisco)

Julie Weisberg PhotographyMy mom set me up with some bad habits like eating herring out of a jar (I know, gross) and chewing on gum while blowing inverted bubbles. That makes me pretty much a mini version of her. She also set me up to always think for myself, do it my way and never follow the crowd. It's no wonder I went into the arts. While there I fell in love with photography. It took a while to decide what to do with it. After a long career working with dogs for a living, in 2007 I started a professional photography business. Now I'm pretty much living my dream as a full time photographer. Best of all, I get to photograph one of my favorite subjects -- dogs! Oh my gosh, I am dog crazy! I love all animals but dogs are my passion. On top of having a job I love I've received several industry awards and have been published in various magazines, books and blogs. I even have a photoillustration in a permanent collection at the Philadelphia Museum Of Art. Giving back is important to me too so I spend a few hours a month photographing dogs at a local shelter, working the intake of new rescued dogs and fostering. It's richly rewarding and makes life more purposeful for me. In conclusion it's only fitting that I work with Pet Food Express photographing the animals who've come into our lives, given us unconditional love and made our lives that much better.

Kira Stackhouse (East Bay)

Neuna Photography Kira StackhouseNearly a decade ago, I moved to California with the hope of doing something different. As a native of Pennsylvania and a post-college resident of NYC, San Francisco paved a new creative path for me. I started Nuena Photography in 2007 and have been living the dream ever since.

Though I’d been photographing my pets throughout my life (including but not limited to a frog, hermit crabs, cats, hamsters, birds, and a turtle), it was not until 2009, when I got my first dog - a Boston Terrier named Harley - that my life changed forever. Having Harley inspired me to start Project DOG, a social media campaign-turned-coffee table book project, focused on promoting responsible dog ownership. I was able to find and photograph more than 300 dogs representing 170 dog breeds (all from the SF Bay Area), fundraise $24k via Kickstarter, and publish a 352-page book within six months of the project’s inception. (Read more about Project DOG here.)

Since then my work has appeared in many publications including BARK, Life+Dog, Modern DOG, The World's Ugliest Dog Contest, Cute Overload, Golden Gate Fields, and Barron's series of dog breed bibles. In addition to Pet Food Express, other regular clients include Molly Mutt, 7x7 and Restoration Hardware. And I'm thrilled to have been named the Bay Area A-List’s Best Pet Photographer for 2011 and 2012.

You can often find me shooting pet-related events in the Bay Area, and photographing adoptable dogs for local dog rescue organizations. I love helping out as much as I can and the San Francisco Bay Area is an amazing place to be a “dog person!”

You can find out more about me and view my work at www.nuena.com and kirastackhouse.com, or follow me on Facebook and Twitter. I love my pets, and I’m absolutely in love with creating fun, memorable images that people will love and cherish forever!

Mark Rogers (San Francisco, Peninsula, North Bay)

 Mark Rogers Photography

I've been photographing animals since I could hold a camera. In fact, the very first picture I ever printed was a shot I took when I was 11 of my black cat sitting in a patch of hot pink azalea bushes. What began as a lifelong hobby turned into a full-time career as a professional pet photographer 5 years ago when I decided I much preferred spending my work day playing on the ground with cats, dogs and bunnies than sitting in an office in front of a computer. Since then I've worked with numerous private and commercial clients, appeared in many magazines and books and have been named Best Bay Area Pet Photographer every year in SFGate since 2008.

My style is very contemporary and candid with a focus on capturing animals’ individuality and uniqueness, with a few dashes of humor and action thrown in for good measure. I prefer working on location in settings such as beaches, parks and homes, where pets feel comfortable and can act like themselves.

Working with pets on a daily basis also allows me to indulge my other passion: helping animal welfare and rescue groups. In addition to photographing My Mutt posters for Pet Food Express, which supports such groups all over Northern California, I also serve on the board of Give A Dog A Bone and the advisory board of VETSOS.

If you'd like to see more of my work or are interested in having your pet photographed please stop by Mark Rogers Photography or give me a call at (415) 378-8602.

 Michael Huenergardt (Contra Costa County)

Pet Food Express My Mutt Photographer - Michael Huenergardt

For well over 30 years I’ve enjoyed meeting and photographing a variety of people and animals.  In that time I’ve navigated two completely different careers, sailed around the world, worked with rescue organizations and trained my own dogs.  All of these opportunities have offered me a lifetime full of amazing sights and subjects.  Sometimes I was lucky enough to have my camera and catch them on film.  When I did I discovered a couple of things.  One is that it’s not the amount of good stuff

you put in the picture, it’s more about eliminating the bad.  The other thing I found is that the experience at the time the photograph is taken can be just as important as the image.  Each time you view it you visit a memory not only of what you see but of the time surrounding it. For me there is no greater reward than seeing someone view my work and witness that spark of emotion or hearing about a memory that has been rekindled.

With this in mind I try to make every photo session as relaxing and enjoyable as possible for both the owners and the pets.  Each session has its own challenges, whether it’s in a park with numerous distractions or at someone’s home photographing a pet hiding behind furniture or crawling under a bed.  Working to overcome these challenges and capturing the animal’s personality in the photo is part of the fun. It takes a little time, understanding, and sometimes a lot of patience.  In the end we come away with an image that sparks a memory of our brief time together.

Monika Siauw (Los Angeles)Monika Siauw

I was born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia. Where I come from, pets are few and far between. It wouldn’t be until I moved to California that I was able to discover my love of animals of all kinds. Now I am the proud parent of two adopted cats, and look forward to adopting a puppy in the future when I have the space.

I attended college to study music and recording engineering, only later realizing my natural interest in photography. Eventually I was spurred to pursue my true passion. I began working in wedding and engagement photography, eventually expanding into fashion and style photography, dabbling in cinematography, and all the while photographing my pets in my spare time.

When the opportunity arose for me to work with the My Mutt program, I jumped at the chance to combine my two loves, photography and animals. Now I use everything I have learned to capture the spirit and personality of the amazing animals that I meet.

Pam Harvey-Merrill (Contra Costa County, Napa)

Pet Food Express My Mutt Photographer Pam Harvey-Merrill

Photography has always been my passion. From the time I was a youngster, I always had a camera in my pocket.

For over 35 years, I was fortunate enough to work on the waterfront for an ocean carrier (unfortunately - it was in an office). During that time, I was given free rein to take photos anytime, anywhere, as long as I was on my lunch hour or coffee break. With permission from the captain of the vessels, I was even permitted to go aboard whenever they were in port. One time, I talked my way onto one of the tug boats that was assigned to assist a vessel preparing to depart. The other tug was backing up, "posed" under the humongous bow of the vessel, the sun was setting and the sky line of San Francisco was in the back ground. What a shot!!!

New security measures following 9/11 put an end to my shipyard photography, and a short time later, I "graduated" (some people would say "retired") from my job with the ocean carrier. As I was now looking for a new focus for my lens, when someone mentioned to me that Pet Food Express just happened to be looking for another photographer, I jumped at the opportunity. It has been about 5+ years now of getting to do what I love to do and I could not be happier.

And I've yet to meet a dog or cat that has complained that one of my photos has made them look fat.

Scott Broecker (Carmel)

Scott Broecker is a lifelong dog lover who combines his artistic style with a fine technical skill to capture the essence of the dogs he photographs. Originally from Closter, NJ, he moved to San Francisco, Oakland, and then Alameda before finally settling in Pacific Grove with his wife Carie twenty years ago.Pet Food Express My Mutt Photographer By The Sea Pet Photos

Together they were motivated by their beloved shepherd mix, Sunshine, to found Coastal Canine magazine, now in its fifth year of publication. In honor of the sixteen years they spent traveling, hiking, dining and going to the beach with Sunshine, they aim to inspire others with articles about people helping dogs and dogs helping people, as well as a wide range of other dog-related topics.

With Carie also cofounding two of the local rescue groups, they have personally done lots of fostering, and all five of their dogs – Marshall, Lucy Brown, Savanna, Buster, and Buddy - plus cat Betty Boop are rescues. Between the fostering, the magazine, the My Mutts, and the rescue work, Scott’s life has totally gone to the dogs - and of course that’s a good thing.

Scott has been taking photos for the Carmel Pet Food Express ever since its June 2009 opening, which translates to over 100 My Mutt photo shoots, and he swears every shoot has been fun. His favorite place to shoot is usually along the coast with the waves breaking in the background and the warm late afternoon lighting helping to bring out both the colors in the dog and the landscape.

Scott's work can be viewed at www.scottbroecker.com and www.coastalcaninemag.com. He can be reached at 831-277-9539.

Sonia Gates (South Bay)

Pet Food Express My Mutt Photographer Sonia Gates Photography

My path to pet photography began with a desire to chronicle the lives of my two Labrador companions, Henry and Annie. I wanted to capture and document their uniqueness, not just with glamour shots but with shots of them being their sandy, slobbery, fun-loving selves. I wanted to own a collection of beautiful images that would make me smile long after they had crossed the rainbow bridge. Some years later, pet photography seemed a natural evolution and a perfect fit. Today, I am in the business of doing what I love for others who share my desire.

I also have a passion for rescue photography. I am a volunteer at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter where I started as a dog walker and now work on a weekly basis, assisted by an incredible team of volunteers, taking photos for the shelter’s web and social media sites. I also volunteer my services to other animal welfare non-profits in the Santa Cruz area. In rescue photography, I especially love photographing animals deemed more difficult to adopt out – seniors, those with health issues or breeds considered less popular among potential adopters. My goal is to capture images that will catch the eyes and win the hearts of potential adopters. It is challenging but extremely rewarding.
I feel privileged to now be a South Bay photographer for the Pet Food Express My Mutt program. Their contribution to animal rescues is impressive and it is an honor to be a part of that effort. It is another perfect fit and I look forward to meeting more wonderful people and their pets through the My Mutt program.

Pet Food Express: Self-Service Pet Wash Skip to main content

Self-Service Pet Wash

You clean your dog - we clean the mess!

Self-Service Pet Wash - $15

No appointment, no hassle.

Just $15

Tired of fighting with your dog to stay in the tub during a bath? Worried about washing your pet outside with cold water? Wash your dog in our pet wash.

What's Included:

  • Back-saving raised tubs
  • Complementary premium shampoo selection
  • Fresh towels, aprons, and blow dryers
  • We clean the mess!
  •

    What it is:

Our Self-Service Dog Wash is the best place to wash your pets. Our raised tubs and water-proof aprons keep pet parents dry and pain-free while our convenient leash clips and great selection of natural shampoos mean you can meet your pet grooming needs without a trip to the groomer.

All pets—from cats to pigs to sheep—are welcome in our self-serve dog wash.

    How it works:

    1) Choose a pet wash station and secure your furry friend in the raised tub by attaching your dog’s collar or harness to one of our easy-to-         use tie-downs.
    2) Enter a token into the machine, select warm-water-rinse and gently rinse your dog with the extended shower head.
    3) Select a complementary premium shampoo. Easily lather your dog with shampoo that is premixed with water and dispenses directly from       shower-head.
    4) Rinse thoroughly.
    5) Once you’re done washing your dog, drying couldn’t be easier. Towel your pet down and finish with the air-dryer next to the tub.
    6) Leave the mess behind and go spend time with your clean, happy dog!

    Cost:

The self-service pet wash costs $15 per token, and is also part of our Buy Three get the Fourth Free program, so $45 for four washes. Once you pop the token into the machine, the pet wash station is active for 25 minutes—which is usually long enough to wash two dogs!

PET WASH FACILITIES ARE NOT AVAILABLE AT OUR CASTRO VALLEY, MOUNTAIN VIEW AND SAN FRANCISCO (STONESTOWN) LOCATIONS.

Pet Food Express: Michael & Mark’s Story Skip to main content

    Michael & Mark’s Story

Find out how Pet Food Express got started.

PFE Owners - Mark Witriol and Michael Levy with their pets

Michael and Mark have been business partners for nearly 20 years(that's 140 in dog years!), running Pet Food Express. You'd think by now they would have agreed on the story of how they met and formed their business—but as it has been many years, they still need to remind each other about some of the details.

It all started back when Michael was a boy of 7 and wasn’t allowed to get a dog, so he began bringing home stray cats.  At 16, he finally got his first dog, a German Shepherd, and trained him to respond to many commands off-leash. Years later, while attending City College of San Francisco in 1976, Michael decided to start a dog training business in order to supplement student loans (During this time, Mark was having his Bar Mitzvah). By the 1980s, Michael's little business (called Pro-Train) had become the largest professional dog training company in Northern California. He also opened his first “brick and mortar” store in 1980, in West Portal for dog training and pet supplies.

In 1986 (the same year “Top Gun” hit movie theaters), Michael changed the name of his store to Pet Food Express, and the company incorporated the following year expanding its paw-print in the Bay Area. By the time co-owners Michael and Mark finally met in 1992, Pet Food Express had expanded to three locations.

Getting Michael and Mark to discuss how they actually met resulted in this conversation:

Mark: My girlfriend brought home a dog. I didn’t want a dog. The dog’s name was Maxine and she fed the dog Nutro MAX. Good, I can remember the name of the food because of the dog. Maxine and MAX. The problem was the only place we could get the food was from the vet.

    Michael: Or so he thought.

Mark: Or so I thought. The vet was in Marin, and he wasn’t open on the weekends or the evenings and I worked in Berkeley. I would have to drive there on my lunch hour to get the food, but often he was out or didn’t have the right size bag. But my girlfriend would not take any excuses. If I didn’t bring the right food, I was in trouble.

When my girlfriend wasn’t at home, I fed the dog spaghetti. Why? I liked spaghetti; I was eating spaghetti, so the dog got spaghetti. When I got a second dog—a white poodle—I added red tomato sauce, because when the dog was eating, it looked like he had just eaten a deer.

One day, Michael opened his third store, in Berkeley, right next to my electronics business.

Michael: I thought we met at the Cow Palace dog show?

Mark: We did, but I stopped in your store first but you didn’t know who I was. Michael tried to get me to switch foods, but I wasn’t listening.

Michael: But 99 percent of our customers would.

Mark: My girlfriend dragged me to the dog show at the Cow Palace to look for a poodle, so I didn’t really have anything to do. Michael and I started talking. I got the book of coupons he was handing out. Then we realized we had businesses right next to each other.

In the electronics business, I had to fight just to make $5 on a fax machine. Michael started telling me how good the pet food business was—and that dogs don’t write bad checks.

Michael: We saw it as a great opportunity. Mark had a lot of retail experience, which I lacked at that time.

And that was the beginning –almost 20 years ago. In 1993, Michael and Mark opened another store, this time in San Leandro with their first self-service pet wash. In 1996, Pet Food Express expanded to 10 stores; in 1999 to 15; in 2006 to 28 and currently the company has 62 California locations—with more coming soon!

“We are becoming a larger and larger business, and we view ourselves as a well-run operation,” Michael said. “But we cannot forget where we came from and how important it is to act like an independent and to have a personal touch on everything we do.”

(Just in case you're concerned or curious, Mark no longer feeds his dogs spaghetti.)

Mark: I actually do still feed the dogs spaghetti. By the way, although I did not want the dog initially, I came to love the dog—even though she ate 38 pairs of my girlfriend’s shoes, three couches, sheet rock and bricks.  When my girlfriend left (over the dog), I took Maxine and the poodle, Nick, even though it was my girlfriend’s dog.

    Customers are truly #1

All retailers make this claim but how many of them actually live it?  We see our customers as people, not just as wallets.  We know that you love your pets as we love ours so we discover and honor the needs and wants of each individual that visits us.  Shop with us and you will see that we offer a different environment in which to shop for your special friends.  In order to be effective in this, we educate and train our employees but more than anything else, it is our employees’ love and passion for pets that sets them apart and inspires them to do whatever it takes to earn your trust and make you happy.

    Our Low Price Guarantee

We will beat our competitor's price on any identical item!
