Sirius Dog Training at Pet Food Express Danville

Trainer: Sarah Kevin

Sarah, a life long dog owner, was first exposed to positive dog training methods when attending Sirius puppy Training classes in 2010 with her puppy. She started reading and researching the methods and loved learning about how to train a dog in a reward based system. Then with a little prompting from her husband decided to pursue a career as a dog trainer after 28 years in nursing.

Sarah graduated with honors from Animal Behavior College in May of 2013, and has apprenticed with Sirius Dog Trainer, Pam Behrens, ABCDT, CNWI since April 2012.

What Sarah enjoys most is watching puppies and their owners have the “ah-ha” moments as they learn how to communicate with each other.

Sarah is a member of The Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), which has a mission of enhancing the human-dog relationship through education and dog-friendly training.

Sarah is on the Board of South Bay Trainers (SBT), a network of trainers and animal professionals dedicated to using, promoting and educating the public about humane and positive training methods.

Sarah currently lives in Santa Clara with her husband and two Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, and competes in Nosework.

Class Description and Pricing

Cost: $200 for 5 weeks

Puppy 1
Our puppy classes specifically focus on teaching bite inhibition (gentle jaws), socialization with other dogs and people (especially children, men and strangers), calming and handling, attention, off-leash household manners/obedience and the prevention of behavior and temperament problems. Special emphasis is paid to phasing out the need for food lures and rewards for reliable verbal and hand signal, off-leash control (around the home or on walks), yet promoting the continued use of food treats for classical conditioning - to teach dogs to thoroughly enjoy the company of people and other dogs.

Requirements: Puppies must be between 10-18 weeks old at the start date of class with 2 DHLPP vaccinations, one of which must have been given after 8 weeks of age and at least 5 days prior to start of class.

Puppy 2 - for graduates of Puppy 1
Early puppy training is as easy as it is enjoyable. Much more challenging though, is to ensure that your puppy maintains bite inhibition, remains socialized and friendly to other dogs and people, and continues to pay heed to you instructions while working through adolescence. Training focuses on proofing verbal control without the need for food lures or rewards, or any other training tools. Exercises include distance sits in play (for the home, yard, dog parks and off-leash walks), settle down, rock-solid stays, and both off-leash and on-leash walking and heeling. Puppy 2 will help you teach your adolescent pup to be calm, attentive and responsive and to respond quickly, willingly and happily, especially when distracted, off-leash, and at a distance.

Requirements: Graduates of SIRIUS® Puppy 1; under 8 months of age; proof of rabies vaccine.

Sirius Adult Classes
Dog Training I - For friendly dogs older than 19 weeks.
An excellent class for dogs that have never taken a class before or for dogs needing to brush up on rusty obedience skills. Reward training techniques make training adolescent and adult dogs a peaceful and enjoyable experience. Initial exercises focus on calming, settling-down and regaining attention to facilitate teaching basic manners - sit, down, stand, stay, walking on-leash and polite greetings.

Requirements: This class is for friendly dogs over 19 weeks.  Proof of current vaccinations required.
